9. Principal's Report- Mr. Muir
We have many exciting programs coming up….
" Science Club- Sponsored by St. Cyril's Foundation
" Began last January
" Foundation is a separate group that endows the school and is not part of the archdiocese.
" Joe Casey is the president of the foundation; he is a long time parishioner and was a school parent and now a school grandparent. He is retired and has served on the board of several major companies and has been the CEO of many corporations.
The foundation has a 3 Pronged mission-
As it is for a long-term benefit of the school and for good enrollment of the school, since many local schools are struggling with enrollment cost.
A. Provide long term tuition assistance, with no holes in the budget
B. On going faculty enhancements and development with seminars and workshops
C. Curriculum Enhancement
- Starting with the new science club
- We will have 20 experiments
- First session will run 10 weeks
- Younger and older groups, K-3rd grade with meet for an hour on Wednesday
- 4-7th grade will meet for an hour on Monday and Tuesdays
- We are waiting for the materials to arrive so we can start by November 26th.
- Miss Stolo will be heading up the program
- The foundation has put up $10,000. So the program can be offered "at the bargain basement rate" of $50.00 per student.
" Looking at a Math program…However, not sure if kids will want to sign up for algebra after school
" Mrs. K has the mighty math masterminds…project with an oriented math theme
" Junior high kids math competition
" Right now the focus is on younger kids so we can build this program as we go…younger kids still think math is fun!
" Accelerated Reader a new program which will allow students to have access to tests for any book that they can think of
" Fiction or non-fiction…anything from a library
" Students can log into the program and take tests for the book they have recently read and then they can see how well they understood the book and a report will be generated for the school
" It is a very popular program
Mock trial
" We are still in it. And we just went to LA county courthouse
" Students were in the courtrooms doing the jobs of the prosecutors and Defense attorneys
" The next group will go next Tuesday, November 13th.
" Anyone can volunteer, as we are more than interested in having people sign up. Mr. Franks and Mr. Blake have spent a lot of time on it
" Good idea to have a mock trial meeting
" A new family says they are not told about things only the kids are…she thought they missed things
" Coach Nancy can post sports tryouts on the website
Spanish Program-
" Pilar picked up the materials
" Over 40 kids interested
" It will be conversational and only Spanish will be spoken
" We will see what level each kid is at by having them take a test to see where they are
" Younger kids we will use flash cards and other learning tools
Finally…Daycare- Focus is to work on safety
" There was a system in place for so long and it was run by one person
" We need to change up the system. We need to seal up some things as well.
" On November 2nd we started to do a more safety related sign in and sign out for all the students. (Something similar to what the pre-K has always done)
" When homework ends in daycare, only the bathrooms in the church will be used so the children can be seen…children should only be on one side.
" Sign/in and out books that were separate are now all in one
" Students will sign in at homework time, in the appropriate grade level books.
" 2nd/3rd grade books will be in the library and 4th/8th grade will be with Mrs. Gallucci.
" All books will be brought to the daycare bungalow for sign out.
" Since it gets dark early, everyone comes inside at 5:00.
Please call with any and all suggestions…we want after school to be educational and fun for the kids but most of all safe
We will be starting programs with computers in the daycare bungalow.
You can get hours volunteering for daycare
Open Discussion
Can we get other programs for after school?
- We will be sending out flyers asking what programs students/parents would be interested in.
- We need volunteers for these programs.
- We are limited on some of the programs that we would like to offer after school since the gym is occupied
- We run into problems with the facility…some kids just want to play
We are trying to build up the programs we have after school…. From 5th grade on they have sports and academic decathlon, mock trial etc….
Why is the beginning of the year so frontloaded on the activities?
- Mock Trial runs between September and November - small window. Academic Decathlon begins early
- Kids are interested in after school activities
- Maybe we could limit A and B sports on Monday
- We have to be concerned with 8th graders, as they are getting ready for high school.
A parent asked about getting fundraising dollars from their purchase at California Pizza Kitchen. Atoosa asked for a vote and there was a unanimous NO.
CPK made $360 for the school.
" David Musso from Benchmark Foods, LLC joined our meeting
" Benchmark Foods, LLC distributes healthy and nutritious snacks for the school, which are available at the snack bar at school.
" They are 150 calories and are lower in fat and only contain 15 grams of carbohydrates.
" They distribute them by direct selling
" The snacks were developed for people following a low glycemic diets and are diabetic friendly.
" Teachers have said it sustains energy and are the equivalent to eating 2 slices of turkey
" Creative partnering…involving the cakes with fundraisers
Michelle Maria has spoken to the manager of the Valley Inn and she said we could pick one whole week for fundraising. A flyer would be sent out letting people know that during that week they could go to the Valley Inn for lunch or dinner and 15% would go back to the school.
There was discussion about it not really being a family restaurant and the question was whether or not to include the kids in any visit there.
Meeting adjourned at 9:05
